Immigration officers have been deployed to the North Carolina city as part of the Trump administration's expanding campaign on unauthorized immigration, according to authority reports.

The initiative, dubbed "Charlotte's Web Operation", was revealed on Saturday, with officials stating that "illegal immigrants with criminal records" would be the focus in the metropolitan region.

"Our department is deploying DHS law enforcement to this location to maintain public safety and public safety threats are removed," government authorities stated.

Local officials, including Charlotte's mayor, published a collective announcement opposing the operation, saying it was causing "needless concern and instability" in the local population.

Since the administration's continuation, government agencies have been deployed to multiple cities including Washington DC, Los Angeles and Chicago to implement the pledge of "an unprecedented removal initiative" in American history.

The Department of Homeland Security said they are conducting the initiative because the state has not respected the nearly 1,400 ICE persons held, meaning they had been discharged due to "protective measures".

City Status

This municipality is not a protective jurisdiction - cities that have policies in place to reduce support given to federal immigration authorities - but it is a "officially recognized inclusive community". This is a official classification for urban centers that are dedicated to diversity acceptance.

"President Trump and Secretary [Kristi] Noem will act to safeguard the public when municipal leaders won't," authorities announced.

Demographic Context

Charlotte is an ethnically diverse municipality, with about nearly one-fifth of inhabitants being foreign-born, according to census information.

Government agencies has not said how long the enforcement actions will persist. Chicago's crackdown, which commenced several months ago is still ongoing.

Political Reaction

In recent days, US Representative and Democrat, Alma Adams said she was notified about the initiative and was "deeply worried" about immigration enforcement personnel coming to the state.

The subsequent location on the administration's agenda is set to be the southern municipality, according to sources, and that as many as two hundred officers could be sent to the area.

Campaigns in other municipalities like Chicago and Los Angeles have received backlash over allegations of overly aggressive tactics.
