‘It seems like sorcery’: is light therapy truly capable of improving your skin, whitening your teeth, and strengthening your joints?

Light therapy is clearly enjoying a wave of attention. Consumers can purchase illuminated devices designed to address complexion problems and aging signs as well as sore muscles and periodontal issues, the newest innovation is a toothbrush equipped with small red light diodes, promoted by the creators as “a significant discovery in personal mouth health.” Internationally, the market was worth $1bn in 2024 and is projected to grow to $1.8bn by 2035. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. According to its devotees, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, enhancing collagen production, relaxing muscles, reducing swelling and persistent medical issues and potentially guarding against cognitive decline.

The Science and Skepticism

“It appears somewhat mystical,” observes Paul Chazot, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Of course, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Sunlight regulates our circadian rhythms, additionally, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Artificial sun lamps are a common remedy for people with seasonal affective disorder (Sad) to combat seasonal emotional slumps. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.

Different Light Modalities

Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, consumer light therapy products mostly feature red and infrared emissions. During advanced medical investigations, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, which runs the spectrum from the lowest-energy, longest wavelengths (radio waves) to short-wavelength gamma rays. Light-based treatment employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, the highest energy of those being invisible ultraviolet, then the visible spectrum we perceive as colors and infrared light visible through night vision technology.

Dermatologists have utilized UV therapy for extensive periods for addressing long-term dermatological issues like vitiligo. It works on the immune system within cells, “and dampens down inflammation,” explains a dermatology expert. “There’s lots of evidence for phototherapy.” UVA penetrates skin more deeply than UVB, while the LEDs in consumer devices (typically emitting red, infrared or blue wavelengths) “typically have shallower penetration.”

Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance

Potential UVB consequences, including sunburn or skin darkening, are understood but clinical devices employ restricted wavelength ranges – indicating limited wavelength spectrum – which minimises the risks. “It’s supervised by a healthcare professional, meaning intensity is regulated,” notes the specialist. Essentially, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – unlike in tanning salons, where regulations may be lax, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”

Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty

Colored light diodes, he says, “don’t have strong medical applications, but could assist with specific concerns.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, enhance blood flow, oxygen absorption and cell renewal in the skin, and promote collagen synthesis – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Studies are available,” comments the expert. “Although it’s not strong.” In any case, given the plethora of available tools, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. We don’t know the duration, proper positioning requirements, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. There are lots of questions.”

Treatment Areas and Specialist Views

Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, a microbe associated with acne. Research support isn’t sufficient for standard medical recommendation – even though, notes the dermatologist, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Certain patients incorporate it into their regimen, he says, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. If it’s not medically certified, standards are somewhat unclear.”

Innovative Investigations and Molecular Effects

Simultaneously, in innovative scientific domains, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Virtually all experiments with specific wavelengths showed beneficial and safeguarding effects,” he says. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that it’s too good to be true. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.

The scientist mainly develops medications for neurological conditions, but over 20 years ago, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He developed equipment for cellular and insect experiments,” he recalls. “I was quite suspicious. It was an unusual wavelength of about 1070 nanometres, which most thought had no biological effect.”

What it did have going for it, however, was its ability to transmit through aqueous environments, enabling deeper tissue penetration.

Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits

Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, producing fuel for biological processes. “All human cells contain mitochondria, including the brain,” says Chazot, who prioritized neurological investigations. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is generally advantageous.”

With specific frequency application, mitochondria also produce a small amount of a molecule known as reactive oxygen species. In low doses this substance, explains the expert, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”

Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: oxidative protection, inflammation reduction, and cellular cleanup – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.

Present Investigation Status and Expert Assessments

Upon examining current studies on light therapy for dementia, he reports, several hundred individuals participated in various investigations, including his own initial clinical trials in the US
